Nova Shares a Unique Approach to MedTech Design and Development

At Nova, we take pride in our distinctive approach to MedTech design, setting us apart in the industry. Our philosophy of being "Outsiders on the Inside" stems from our diverse background in various industries, such as consumer electronics and acoustics. Drawing inspiration from these sectors, we infuse modernity and a high-touch experience into the world of medical technology.

What truly sets us apart is our status as a women-led design firm. Unlike traditional male-dominated product development, we foster a collaborative environment where collective innovation thrives. It's not about individual designs here; it's about pooling our talents to create something greater than the sum of its parts. This collaborative spirit seamlessly integrates design, engineering, and usability, resulting in products that prioritize consumer-oriented experiences, even within the realm of medical devices. These elements define our unique approach and drive our clients toward success.

One standout example of our approach is evident in our work with Cambridge Heartware. Traditional Holter monitors posed challenges for women due to their inability to accommodate various body shapes. Breast tissue makes it difficult for women to get an accurate reading. Without a good reading, it is not possible to diagnose accurate health outcomes which jeopardizes the health of women.  Recognizing the nuances of women's anatomy, we proposed a redesign that addressed these issues, ensuring comfort and ease of use.

Another instance where our unique perspective made an impact was our collaboration with Embr Labs. Initially conceived as a "personal thermostat," our collaboration led to a transformative device for menopausal women experiencing hot flashes. By shifting the focus from technical aspects to human-centered design, we created a solution that was not only effective but also desirable to wear, leading to sales of $25 million.

Looking ahead, we predict a future where MedTech seamlessly integrates human factors, design, and engineering to create optimal solutions. We envision wearables that are invisible yet functional, providing more benefits than burdens, and devices that not only predict health issues but also enable users to manage their health proactively.

Furthermore, we foresee a shift towards non-pharmaceutical solutions and systems that enhance user experience and adherence through design that inherently makes people want to use them. The goal is to translate high-stakes, technical clinical experiences into formats that reduce cognitive load, instill confidence, and improve outcomes.

Nova’s insights underscore a pivotal shift in MedTech towards more thoughtful, inclusive, and user-centered design. Our pioneering work, especially in women's health tech, not only showcases the potential for innovation but also highlights the significant work still needed to bridge gaps in care and funding. As MedTech continues to evolve, it is clear that we will be at the forefront, leading with empathy and respect to create solutions that truly make a difference.
