Hype Crews, the Ultimate Power Up Event Recap

"Outsiders on the Inside: Hype Crews, the Ultimate Power Up" was one of our largest events to date and we’re so grateful for the panelists and attendees who made it possible. The event series has been going for three years strong and we have no plans of slowing down. We wanted to share a few of our favorite moments from the event to show our appreciation.

Get involved and volunteer

You can build a hype crew in many ways: one approach is to get involved and volunteer for any and everything! When Lindsey Maxwell, VP at Teague, began her career as a junior designer, she volunteered for a project that exposed her to all aspects of the design process. The people she met during that time became the same support group that cheered her on as she advanced within the organization. Our panelists noted that, while taking on additional responsibilities at work can be daunting, opportunities like this early in their careers and the relationships they forged are key contributors to their success.

You deserve it - take the leap

Regardless of the support they have and their seniority, panelists agreed that it’s important to remind themselves they belong, and that they deserve their success. Many of our panelists work in male-dominated fields and regularly find themselves to be the only women at the table. During these moments, reminding yourself that you belong can be invaluable. Lea Stewart, Senior Design Manager, revealed that even before this event, she gave herself a small pep-talk to boost her confidence. Designer and educator Carly Hagins remarked that situations that appear intimidating and risky often yield the most significant rewards. They all agreed getting hyped up and taking the leap is crucial.

Proud>Humble

Leila Mitchell, Founder of LLM Design, occasionally struggles to discuss her personal achievements, but relishes the opportunity to celebrate the successes of her team and colleagues. She urges other leaders, particularly women, to shift their mindset from humility to pride when it comes to acknowledging the achievements of both themselves and their team. Rather than approaching it as a competition, leaders should celebrate one another and the accomplishments of women across their industries.

Make it Happen

In the age of social media, we have more opportunities to connect than ever before, yet we often feel disconnected at a personal level. It’s not rare that we find ourselves saying we need to catch up with a friend over coffee, but the plan never materializes. With the demands of work and daily life, finding the time for an old colleague or a new acquaintance can be challenging. Nevertheless, our panelists emphasized the importance of carving out time for those get-togethers, as they could be the very thing you need to get out of your head or make a new connection

Thanks again to our panelists and attendees who made “Outsiders on the Inside: Hype Crews, the Ultimate Power Up” a success. Follow Nova on social media and subscribe to our newsletter to be in the know about future events!
