An Interview with Catherine Jameson

Catherine Jameson, Nova’s lead engineer, is also known around the studio as the google drive organizing expert and sewing extraordinaire. We recently sat down with Catherine and talked about everything from trail mix to how craft projects lead her to engineering. Keep reading to learn more about Catherine!

Nova:

How did you get into engineering?

Catherine Jameson:

I have always loved to make things - from craft projects as a kid to baking and sewing my own wardrobe. I really liked math and physics in high school, so mechanical engineering was a natural fit. I’m passionate about inspiring women to go into engineering fields, and I think all the skills kids learn making crafts are great ways to build engineering know-how - you can read more about this here.

N:

How long have you been working at Nova?

CJ:

Over 4 years - time flies when you’re having fun! I was the first full-time engineer at Nova.

N:

What has been your favorite Nova project?

CJ:

I loved working on Embr Wave 2 - we have been working with Embr since their start and I love how their technology gives back to users. As someone who’s often too cold or too hot, this technology is genius! And I’m so proud of the small, sleek package we were able to achieve while keeping performance and making this product fully waterproof

N:

What is your dream project to work on?

CJ:

I love cooking, so I’ve always wanted to design a blender or toaster. It’s a common 1st year industrial design project for students, but as a mechanical engineer I’ve never gotten the chance to make a kitchen appliance.

N:

What’s your favorite thing about working at Nova?

CJ:

We have an amazing team that feels like family. I love being able to work really closely with designers - at Nova, designers and engineers are always working together to make sure our products are completely integrated.

N:

What’s your favorite afternoon snack?

CJ:

GORP - “good old raisins and peanuts”. My special blend is half honey roasted peanuts, half salted. The raisins get coated in salt…it’s delicious.

N:

What does your perfect (non-work) day look like?

CJ:

A few hours to sew, delicious pastries from Seven Stars, and a hike outdoors.
